The Best Places to See the Northern Lights

The northern lights are colors that can be seen in the sky, usually in places near the Arctic Circle. They’re usually green or pink, and the best time to see them is from September until April from about 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Here are three great places to view the northern lights:

Lapland, Finland

The northern lights can be seen on about 150 nights a year in Lapland, a region in the north of Finland. One popular place is Ounasvaara, a mountain about a 10-minute drive from the city center of Lapland’s capital, Rovaniemi.

However, it’s best to go to places where there is no light pollution to see the northern lights. Visitors can take bus and van tours from Rovaniemi, or go out to see the lights on skis or snowmobiles, or even get pulled by reindeer.

Reykjavík, Iceland

Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík, is just one place in the country to see the northern lights. The city has many parks where visitors can go to see them.

Van and bus tours also drive visitors out of the city, and boat tours go out to sea to see the lights better. Thingvellir National Park, about 50 kilometers from Reykjavík, is also a popular option.

Tromsø, Norway

Even further north than Iceland is the city of Tromsø, Norway, which is about 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Visitors can see the northern lights right in the city, especially near parks or Prestvannet lake, where it’s darker.

The lights can sometimes even be seen when flying into Tromsø.
